Excerpts
Here are just a few of the captions from the book's brochure. You'll
have to order the book to see the pictures that go with each!
The Mississippi River and the steamboats played an important
part in the settling of Hancock County. The larger boats could not
negotiate the Rapids except in high water periods. As a result the
earlier boats stopped at Warsaw before the river canal was built.
At one time railroads criss-crossed the county providing high
speed transportation for most residents of the county. They also
carried agricultural produce from the farms to distant cities where
it was needed.
The F.D. Jolidan and Son Horse farm located three miles northwest
of Elvaston in Montebello Township was a popular spot from 1885
until 1901.
