Hancock County Fourth of July Celebration

This is a huge, multi-day event. There will be a street dance in Carthage on the Square, with great music (adults only). There will be a full day of activities for the entire family on the square (food booths, water fights, entertainment, food...). And, of course, there will be the great fireworks display at the high school.

Exact dates vary every year (OK, the Fourth is easy to pin down!), so check the web site for details as they become available for this year...

Some of the details are coming out about the 2002 Fourth of July Celebration:

The Fourth, of course, will be Thursday this year. Fireworks WILL be that evening. The major celebration activities up around the square will be that day (including the huge parade, all the games, entertainment, booths, etc as normal).

The Street Dance will be held the Saturday evening AFTER the Fourth this year, which is July 6.

Watch here and on the Carthage Calendar Page for details as the time draws near...

As I'm sure you know the Carthage College Campus has sat empty for over 15 years. The auditorium had 8' of water in the basement and was in terrible disarray. In December 2006, Carthage came together and cleaned up the auditorium and put on "A Christmas Wish" a show featuring the music of the Transiberian Orchestra--we filled the 500 seat auditorium 3 times and planted a seed to do something about our once beautiful campus. Since that time the campus has been sold by the South Koreans that owned it to a group of local swine veterinarians, Prairieland Investment Group (PIG), (gotta love the name)--they are in the process of renovating 4 of the campus buildings for offices, storage, and apartments. They also donated the Auditorium property to Carl Sandburg College, our local Junior College district. Tom Schmidt, CSC President, has made a huge commitment to the community by undertaking a $3mil phase 1 "Charger Center Project" on the auditorium. Phase 1 should be completed by the end of March 2010. What this means is that our beloved little Carthage Illinois will once again have a "state of the art" auditorium to house the communities gatherings and nuturing the fine arts. This is a very long winded reason as to why I am talking about Carthage High School class reunions. It is my hope that over the 2010 4th of July weekend and every 4th of July weekend going forward, the 10 classes from Carthage High school that will be celebrating their 5 year interval reunions will unite to have one huge Carthage High School celebration! If all 10 classes from 1960--2005 due for a reunion participate and we average 25 classmates with their spouse from each class attending--we will have 500 Carthage High School enthusiasts all coming together for one great weekend!!!! Here is the w's for what we have planned:
CLASS REUNION YEARS:
60--Terry Newell tlnewell@frontiernet.net
65--Mike Kilgore mike@myobgynrecruiter.com

90--Gretchen (Smith) Vacko VACKOGE@365u.will.k12.il.us

The great thing about this is that each class member can go to www.carthage-il.com and click on the reunion 2010 and make their reservations--all we have to do is make sure that all the classmates have the information. For the non internet savvy-(pre--1975) :) we will do a mailing from each class rep. I hope to have the website up by the end of February--that will give us 4 months to solicit the masses. If we get the majority of the classmates to sign up online--in 5 years we will have a database of all the Carthage High School grads from 1960-2010!!!

I blog at www.carthage-il.com --click on forums and you'll find more information under events/business needs/schools etc........

Hi Everyone!!!
The 1st Annual Carthage High School Class reunion is fast approaching and we look forward to having all 10 class's from 1960--2005 back in town for an unbelievably fun filled weekend!
Here are some things we need to think about:
1) each class will need a representative to help check in the classmates at the auditorium on July 2nd
2) each class will need some signage so that their classmates know where to assemble at the different events
3)"Lake Linda" will not be providing alcoholic beverages--each class might decide what to do about this
4) each class will need to collect from classmates that do not have internet capability--(hopefully this will be kept to a minimum by steering your classmates to the online signup)
5) The class with the most signups will get preferred seating at all events--(there really isn't any bad seats--but it's fun to have a little competition)
6) encourage your classmates to send photos in a jpeg format to carsnfrd@adams.net  --we will try to use some of them in our slide show!
7)stress to your classmates that this is our 1st year and that we are bound to make some mistakes--be patient--plan on having a great time--and you will!---
8) get out there and contact everyone in your class!!!! forward emails--dig up old phone #'s--have call-a-thons
9) LET ME KNOW HOW I CAN HELP---LET ME KNOW WHAT UNIQUE THINGS YOU ARE DOING!!! I'LL ADD THEM TO THE ITENERARY AS I GET THEM.
10) Forward this email to everyone you know in your class!!!!!

Here are some ideas for individual class events over the weekend:
1) Have a class meet and greet at a local establishment from 5pm to 7pm on Friday night before the big show
2) Have a class "mixer" after the show Friday night at a local watering hole
3) Team up with other class's to have more fun
4) invite class's on either side of your graduation year to join your class celebrations
5)plan a class float for the big parade Sunday!!--let me know I've got entry forms
6)plan a family picnic on the square for  Sunday--show off your kids!
7)have uniquely colored t-shirts with your class year and slogan---you'll know who is in your class by their t-shirt
8)form a facebook page--class of 75--class of 85--done

We hope to have the www.carthage-il.com  website ready to go by the end of April. You will be able to sign up for the reunion right online!! we'll keep track of everything for you. Here is the breakdown of the costs:
Friday night Reunion show ---$15
Lake Linda Hog roast---          $25
Golf tourney--                          TBD

total                                          $48
